The Wales Women’s Budget Group exists to influence and inform public policy to promote a gender-equal economy through gender budgeting, potentially adding £13.6 billion to the Welsh economy.
In 2019 Wales’ Gender Equality Review set out clear evidence for tackling gender equality through gender budgeting, within the context of a wider equalities mainstreaming approach. In 2020, The Open Society Foundation gave a year’s funding to set up the Wales Women’s Budget Group. This funding came as part of a wider four-nations project working to establish and grow Women’s Budget Groups across the UK.
...encouraging the use of gender budgeting tools in government budgetary processes. These tools highlight how taxation and budget decisions affect men and women differently. They also help to ensure that economic and fiscal policy plays an active role in achieving equality goals.
...providing independent analysis of government spending decisions and fiscal policy to improve decision making and budgetary processes.
...acting as a bridge between research bodies and the women’s movement in Wales. It will ensure that economic research in Wales provides robust evidence, making the case for changes that help women in Wales achieve their potential.
...building capacity across the Wales Women’s movement to participate in economic debate in Wales through training, events and resources.
The Wales Women’s Budget Group is managed by a diverse committee of people from across civil society, involving equality organisations, academic and economic research organisations, and women’s networks. We also have a wider group of supporters and stakeholders – find out how to join the debate.

Welsh Government make spending decisions that affect every area of our lives – education and skills, childcare, social care, housing and economic development to name a few. These decisions affect women, men and non-binary people differently. The WWBG works to ensure that these differences are considered by Welsh Ministers and officials so that spending decisions help to create a gender equal Wales.
